The Social Media Communications Specialist will work to develop, promote, and maintain a vibrant online community presence for BCBSNC. She/he will protect and enhance BCBSNC’s reputation and position it favorably to key stakeholders including BCBSNC employees and members, the news media, business and community leaders, consumers, employer groups, insurance industry, and health care providers. This role combines aspects of corporate communication, sales, branding, human resources, and customer service - online engagement is part of the role, but so too is the integration of that online world with offline efforts, business strategy, and the culture of our organization.

As a core member of the Corporate Communications team, works closely with other BCBSNC departments, as well as external partners and stakeholders, to deliver, and execute on, superior communications plans that are strategic, measurable and aligned with corporate goals.

Think of your role as a social media evangelist spreading the benefits of social media throughout the company helping stakeholders understand our social media strategy, benefits and how they can play a role in a "Social Business". This position is both challenging and exciting! Your work will be critical in transforming BCBSNC into a social business. This will be done by identifying key social media opportunities both inside and outside of the company and leading projects and assisting in the execution of strategies, monitoring and cultivating our online communities and media coverage, building relationships with online influencers and coordinating content strategies across the enterprise, customers, and partners.

Successfully use social media channels and tools to engage with consumers and employees on behalf of BCBSNC, protect and enhance the company’s online reputation, and share the stories of BCBSNC’s thought leadership and innovation in the health care system of NC.

As a core member of the Corporate Communications team, works closely with other BCBSNC departments, as well as external partners and stakeholders, to deliver, and execute on, superior communications plans that are strategic, measurable and aligned with corporate goals.

Major Job Functions/Components:

  • Identify, analyze and understand target audiences and their specific communication needs – and develop effective messages for those audiences. 
  • Provide strategic communications counsel that supports the success of individual projects as well as divisional and/or enterprise goals. 
  • Develop effective strategies and comprehensive communication plans to promote the company and/or division’s position and meet specific business objectives or manage emerging issues. 
  • Establish specific performance measures that assess the effectiveness and impact of communications plans. 
  • Demonstrate high level of flexibility to respond to rapidly changing business needs. 
  • Actively engage other team members, management, executive leadership and subject matter experts in the development of effective communications strategies and company/division positions on issues. 
  • Researches, refines, analyzes, summarizes and makes use of relevant information in preparation of communications. 
  • Develop appropriate communication deliverables in support of internal communications, public relations and/or divisional initiatives, including, but not limited to, news releases, talking points, internal news articles, speeches, intranet and intranet content and social media posts. 
  • Deliver well-written, edited, style- and audience-appropriate communications across all types of media (written, spoken, social, Web). 
  • Possess a solid understanding of techniques and strategies for using a variety of internal, external and social media communications channels. 
  • May work with Compliance, Legal and other areas to ensure compliance with appropriate legal, regulatory and NCQA accreditation requirements. 
  • Work collaboratively with other communications areas to ensure a consistent approach to corporate communication needs. 
  • May manage contract and vendor relationship with vendor(s). 
  • Support enterprise and corporate projects as needed. 
  • Possess knowledge of a variety of communications disciplines and maintain proficiency in more than one area. 
  • Provides advice and counsel to senior leaders on matters pertaining to communications.

Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree. 
  • 5 years experience in communications and/or project or program management 
  • Proven experience providing counsel to management and others based on industry and professional best practices. 
  • A proficiency in using Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, and MS Outlook.

  • Vision: Help define and execute the evolution to a Social Business. 
  • Manage Projects: Manage overall project development, including project schedules, work assignments and reports; prioritize and traffic multiple projects and deadlines. 
  • Strategic Communication: Ability to communicate complex information in simple terms so stakeholders can understand and take action as needed. Provide counsel to leaders on social media communications. Possess knowledge of a variety of communication disciplines. Have a solid understanding of techniques and strategies for using a variety of internal, external and social media communications channels. Deliver well-written, edited, style- and audience-appropriate communications across all types of media (written, spoken, social, Web). Provide strategic communications counsel that supports the success of individual projects as well as divisional and/or enterprise goals. 
  • Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other communications areas to ensure a consistent approach to corporate communication needs. 
  • Education: Be an internal and external evangelist in creating an understanding of the impacts and benefits of new media channels. Help educate the workforce on our social media strategy and ways they can become involved in social media as appropriate. 
  • Measurement and Reporting: Aid in efforts to define, devise and monitor system of measurements and key metrics to understand program results in terms of social media penetration, impact of social media reputation and perceptions and ROI. Also, to take the measurements and make strategic decisions based off of the data. 
  • Relationship Building: Help drive the strategy behind company-wide social media initiatives and programs, and collaborate with departments across the company to support their business goals through social media best practices in content sourcing, community engagement, regulations and compliance, technical infrastructure and approach, etc. Reciprocally, ensure that New Media team goals are being supported by departments across the company. 
  • Community Management: Help with all aspects of managing internal and external social channels through drafting content, engaging and understanding users, escalating ideas or issues to the appropriate employees and making the community valuable to followers and internal stakeholders.
