Public Relations Manager

Position Summary:

The public relations manager is tasked with fielding media inquiries and pitching stories to the media, preparing media kits and organizing press conferences (as appropriate). In addition to writing press releases and other eternal communications (such as social media content), the PR manager could assist in the development of speeches for organizational leaders as well as prepare communications for internal audiences. This role would also disseminate information to counter negative publicity and handle crisis and emergency communications.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Create and distribute press releases (and other external communications) 
  • Develop social media content 
  • Proactively pitch media 
  • Serve as a company lead on issues management and crisis response 
  • Assist in internal communications and event management (both internal and external) 
  • Serve as a Belk spokesperson (for both media and community audiences) 
  • Manage any PR agencies or other external agencies, as appropriate


  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism/communications/public relations
  • 6-8 years’ experience preferred
  • Must be a confident communicator and presenter
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience serving as an on-the-record spokesperson
  • Experience advising and working with senior level executives
  • Must possess excellent organizational and planning skills
  • Have a full understanding of media needs and media relationships
  • Experience managing/working with external public relations agencies
  • Be proactive, reliable, responsible and accurate with an attention to detail
  • Solid understanding of primary social media platforms, as well as emerging trends in social media
  • Must possess a creative, collaborative, and strategic mindset
  • Self-motivated with a positive and professional approach to management
