Upstate Forever is a nonprofit, membership-based organization that protects critical lands, waters, and the unique character of the ten-county Upstate region of South Carolina. Founded in 1998, Upstate Forever now has nearly 2,000 members, two offices, and a staff of 18.

The COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR will assist the EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR in achieving Upstate Forever’s vision and goals for the Upstate and related strategies and initiatives associated with marketing and communications. A significant portion of the work of the COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR will be based in Greenville but may also include travel within the other nine counties in the Upstate region and occasionally to other parts of South Carolina.


  1. Coordinate messaging for all external communications. Write and edit newsletters, action alerts, op-eds, press releases, and other publications as needed in print and electronic formats; curate Upstate Forever’s social media outlets; and create video content for our YouTube channel 
  2. Regularly revise, enhance, and update website content 
  3. Coordinate outreach to the media; develop and maintain relationships with journalists and editors; pitch and follow up on story ideas 
  4. Support and assist other staff members in writing, editing, and/or proofreading articles, donor letters, speeches, presentations, and other communications 
  5. Serve as the point person working with consultants to implement Upstate Forever’s Marketing and Branding Plan 
  6. Update templates. Ensure consistency of all Upstate Forever communications and marketing materials, both graphics and text 
  7. Coordinate marketing and communications with the Development and Membership team 
  8. Assist in advocating for desired public policies and ordinances 
  9. Respond to requests for information from the public 
  10. Represent Upstate Forever at meetings and conferences; conduct presentations and tours for community organizations and educational groups 
  11. Participate in local task forces, committees, working groups and organizations to represent Upstate Forever’s mission and strategies 
  12. Continually promote Upstate Forever in an effort to recruit new members and donors; assist with fundraising initiatives and events 
  13. Other projects and duties as assigned by the Executive Director


  1. Bachelor’s degree or higher 
  2. Strong writing and editing skills 
  3. Quick learner – able to research and understand environmental and planning issues 
  4. Experience in communications and/or marketing, social media, and website maintenance (WordPress platform) 
  5. Ability to thrive in a team-oriented environment 
  6. Journalism, natural resources, or urban planning background a plus 
  7. Graphic design skills a plus 
  8. Grant management skills a plus

Salary range starts at $30,000 for three-quarter time and $40,000 for full-time and will be competitive and negotiable based on qualifications, skills and experience. Benefits include health and dental insurance and a Simple IRA retirement plan.
